I learned, by rebuilding a 1960s drumset, that I made myself sound a lot better. This inspired me, with the help of the Peter Chopelas Engineering Firm, to create a major breakthrough in drums that could make an ordinary drummer sound better than ordinary.
Chopelas is best known for engineering the windshield on the B2 Stealth Bomber. When travelling 3x the speed of sound at 60,000 feet the norm is not acceptable.
All drummers know (or should know) that drums have a desired sound, called tone or response. Drilling a lot of holes and bolting lugs to the drum shell harms the shell's natural tone and response.
There is a reason you don't find holes in musical instruments. Holes are a real tone killer. Twenty-four to forty holes in one drumshell is an industry standard! How bad is this? Even a solid body guitar sound can be hurt by holes. Ask any guitarist if he would have any interest in drilling holes in his guitar.
Drums usually have twelve
to twenty lugs, with two bolts
and holes per lug, on a single shell.
Try that idea on a bell.
For the same reasons they have a really great sound, Stevens Research drums can get seriously loud. Everybody stick your fist in the air and yell, "Power to the people!"
Stevens Research Drums use self leveling retainer barsTM and tension ringsTM instead of lugs. Stevens Research Retainer Bars and Stevens Research Tension Rings do not touch the shell! Cool.
Stevens Research Drums, to continue with its engineering achievements, will not use mounted tom posts through the bass drum, bass drum legs attached to the shell, or floor tom legs attached to the shell.
